Our goals

This site has five jobs. Everything on it, and everything still to come, has to help with at least one of them.

1

Keep it cheap

A contractor's website should not be another monthly bill that eats into the margin.

  • Live Hosting runs on Azure Static Web Apps, Free plan: $0 a month.
  • Live Photos, jobs and prices sit in Azure storage. At this size (about 40 MB of photos plus a 24 MB timelapse) that is a few cents a month.
  • Live The address (afc.wayfindernorthwest.com) uses a domain that is already owned, with free DNS. No new domain fee.
  • Live No per-person software fees: the estimator, job planner, customer link and photo upload are all built in.
  • Next Email notifications (when added) are priced per message, in fractions of a cent.

Target: under $5 a month all in. Check the Azure bill after the first full month.

2

Save time for Tony

Tony's hours are best spent on jobs, not on typing, measuring twice and chasing paperwork.

  • Live Type an address and the county's parcel outline, lot size and an aerial photo appear. No more sketching a lot from scratch.
  • Live Draw each area on the aerial (rectangles, free shapes, or a drive by its middle line and width). Areas, concrete in cubic yards, materials and labour are calculated.
  • Live Print a survey sheet with every edge numbered. Write the real measurements in the blanks and take a photo.
  • Live The estimate comes out in his familiar layout, with his terms, from one list of prices that he sets once.
  • Live Photos upload from his phone, are resized for him, and spelling is fixed automatically.
  • Next A quick on-the-job update page for the crew: a note, a photo and the stage, from a phone.

Target: a draft estimate from an address in about ten minutes of Tony's time.

3

Be efficient

Every piece of information should be entered once and used everywhere.

  • Live One price list feeds the public estimator, the job planner and the quote, so the numbers always agree.
  • Live Built for phones first, because that is where the work happens.
  • Live Staff can enter information and photos; only the owner approves quotes and publishes photos, so nothing has to be double-checked later.
  • Live Quote requests arrive as saved, structured records, with the estimator's choices carried across.
  • Live Automatic tests run on every change before it goes live, so mistakes are caught early.

Target: nothing typed twice between a request, an estimate and a finished job.

4

Make customers feel they are in safe hands

A customer is trusting Tony with their home and a lot of money. The site should show care before they ever call.

  • Live A nine-step process page shows exactly what happens, from the first visit to the sealer, with photos of real work.
  • Live A projects page tells a whole job in photos, and a timelapse shows concrete going down.
  • Live Meet Tony: his promise of full attention to detail, in his own words.
  • Live The plan is drawn on their own property before any work starts, with the price shown only once the owner has approved it.
  • Live Approvals are recorded with a name and a date, and a reopened job cancels the old approval, so there is never a doubt about what was agreed.
  • Live Privacy: street addresses are never published, and hidden location data is stripped from every uploaded photo.
  • Next Real customer testimonials, with permission, in place of the sample text.

Target: a customer can see who Tony is, what happens next and what it will look like before they call.

5

Let customers see progress

Not knowing what is happening is the biggest source of worry during a project.

  • Live Every job has a private link for the customer. It shows their plan on their property, the pattern and colours chosen, and where the job is in the nine steps.
  • Live The customer can approve the plan and leave suggestions. Tony sees both on the job.
  • Live Tony moves a job from step to step from his phone, and the customer sees it.
  • Next Photos and a short note from the crew each day on the customer's page.
  • Next An email or text to the customer when their job moves on to the next step.

Target: a customer never has to phone to ask where their job is.

"Live" means it is working on the site today. "Next" means planned and not built yet. Cost figures are estimates until the first full month's bill is in.
